What is a support group?

A PTSD support group can bring you into contact with individuals who are in the same situation as you are; they have received a diagnosis after a traumatic event. In addition to talking about your problems, support groups teach you skills for anger and stress management, talk about health and wellness issues, and are mindful of your symptoms and how to understand PTSD.

How to find a support group

You can find a PTSD support group in a community center, the phone book or with an inquiry at a hospital or online. Online support groups allow you to discuss your symptoms and feelings with others; this setting can prove more beneficial if you are not yet ready to deal with this in a group setting in person.

Barriers to support groups

Many people with PTSD try to avoid anything that may trigger flashbacks to the event that caused their PTSD, so group therapy starts slowly. For this reason, it is understandable that you may feel reluctant to join one; however, once you join, you still have to want to overcome and control your PTSD for the benefits of the group therapy to have any effect.

PTSD is a challenge, but it is not an insurmountable one. A therapy group may help you overcome the trauma that changed your life, but only if you take advantage of its services.
